Community Resources
Community is a group of people living in the same locality and
under the same government. A social group or class having common interests, similarities
or identities: a community of interests. Society as a whole; the public.
Community Development is the process of shaping the environment,
or building on the experiences and needs of members both individually and collectively,
of creating the attitudes and developing the skills necessary to progress toward
the realization of those conditions which make up a community.
Sense of Community is the feeling of cooperation or commitment
to the group welfare and willingness to communicate openly in response to and
for others as well as ones self.
Community life is an integral part of the Southern experience.
Student organizations, special events, and campus facilities present a mix of
activities.
Southern Seminary strives to promote the development of the student as a total
person. We are concerned with not only the student’s intellectual and spiritual
growth but also growth in all other aspects of life. This growth involves the
challenge of living comfortably in a community of others. Each environment consist
of residents from a variety of backgrounds, lifestyles and values. The student
is not the only one facing a challenge. We as faculty/staff are challenged to
help foster the development of this community with a sense of cooperation, a shared
identity, mutual respect, and support among the community members. Combining all
of this into a successful sense of community can be difficult without an understanding
of all that is involved.
