The Rev. Dr. Shauna K. Hannan

Assistant Professor of Homiletics

The Rev. Dr. Shauna Hannan is in her fourth year as Assistant Professor of Homiletics at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (LTSS), Columbia, SC.  She has taught in the Doctor of Ministry programs in preaching at Luther Seminary (Saint Paul, MN) and Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (PA), as adjunct professor at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg (PA), as teaching fellow at Princeton Theological Seminary (Princeton, NJ), and as visiting instructor at the Escuela Luterana de Teología (Bogotá, Colombia). She has served as Associate Pastor for the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd (Moorhead, MN) and Associate Director of Admissions for Luther Seminary. 

Dr. Hannan holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish and Communication from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN (1992), a Master of Divinity Degree from Luther Seminary, (1998) and a Ph.D. in Practical Theology (Homiletics) from Princeton Theological Seminary (2011). Her dissertation is entitled, “Lutheran Preachers and the Third Use of the Law: A Homiletical Approach to Overcome the Impasse.” She has studied Spanish in Mexico, Cuba, and Spain and received a Goethe Institute Language Study Fellowship to study German in Dresden, Germany. 

Dr. Hannan is the author of “Lutheran Preaching and the Third Use of the Law,” in Proclaiming the Gospel: Preaching for the Life of the Church (Fortress Press, 2009), and co-author of New Proclamation, Series A, Easter through Christ the King (Fortress Press, 2011). She is a frequent contributor for www.workingpreacher.org and has written articles in journals including Word & World, Journal of Lutheran Ethics, and Caring Connections: An Inter-Lutheran Journal for Practitioners and Teachers of 
Pastoral Care and Counseling. She is a member of the Academy of Homiletics and the Society of Biblical Literature.

Dr. Hannan is a frequent Bible study leader and presenter on topics such as developing a congregational preaching ministry, the role of the hearer in the preaching event, proclamation in context, preaching public issues, and creatively attending to the biblical text. She preaches regularly in LTSS’ Christ Chapel and in congregations and at events across the United States and beyond. This past year she preached for Princeton Seminary’s “Princeton Forum on Youth Ministry” (Princeton, NJ), the Iglesia Evangelica Luterana de Colombia pastor’s convocation (Bogotá, Colombia), and for the Goodsoil worship at the ELCA Churchwide Assembly (Orlando, FL).

At LTSS, Dr. Hannan has served on various committees including the admissions committee, orientation committee and as chair of the contextual education committee. She has served on boards and committees beyond the LTSS campus including the chaplaincy committee for the South Carolina HIV/AIDS Council and the Global Mission board of the ELCA. She presently serves on the board of directors and the chaplaincy committee for Seafarers and International House (a Lutheran mission for seafarers and sojourners) in New York City, and on the steering committee for the ELCA’s Association of Teaching Theologians.  

Dr. Hannan, an ordained pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is rostered in the Florida-Bahamas Synod and is a member of Reformation Lutheran Church, Columbia, SC.
