Below are sample offerings of Lifelong Learning opportunities
through Southern Seminary. Additional offerings may also be available. Check the Events Calendar for upcoming opportunities.
Preaching the Lectionary Workshops
Usually
held a few weeks prior to Lent and Advent, the workshops assist in
sermon and parish preparation. The workshops are led by seminary
professors and are held on the seminary campus and sometimes in other
areas within Region 9 of the ELCA.
Hein-Fry Lecture Series
The annual Hein-Fry Lecture Series, the premier endowed theological
lectureship of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, identifies
key theological issues facing the church and offers lectures that
stimulate inquiry and discussion of those issues. The lectures are
typically held at LTSS in March/April. Read More
Charlton Hall Lectures
Held in partnership with the University of South Carolina, The Nadine Beacham and Charlton F. Hall Sr. Lectureship in New Testament Studies and Early Christianity is held most years during the week before Palm Sunday. The seminary frequently
hosts part 3 of the 3 part lecture series, usually on Friday morning. View the USC Upcoming Events for more information
John L.Yost, Jr. Lectures
The
lectureship, named after the former seminary President, is designed to
highlight issues and concerns of particular interest to persons engaged
in parish ministry. Usually held in conjunction with Alumni Day in May on the day prior to Commencement. Read More about Alumni Day
Jacob L. Morgan Lectureship
The Morgan Lecture is hosted on the seminary campus. The lectures
are designed to promote qualities exhibited by Dr. Morgan, who served as
parish pastor, missionary, and as the first full-time President of the
NC Synod from 1919-1947.
Military Chaplaincy Discernment
The seminary hosts military chaplaincy workshops and courses designed to assist current students, prospective students, and those graduates already in ministry. Read More
Deaconess Ministry JTerm
The seminary frequently hosts a January-Term course offered by the ELCA Deaconess Community that explores the historical, present, and future ministry of diakonia. Read More
Auditing Courses
With the consent of the professor and the registrar, some seminary courses may be audited (not-for-credit). Please contact the registrar for details and fees for auditing classes.
Study Tours
Study Tours are arranged and led by seminary faculty and staff to significant sites across the globe. Tours may be available for-credit, if desired. Read More
Reading Week for Rostered Leaders
All rostered leaders are invited to come to the seminary campus to
read, research, interact and worship with the seminary community. Cost:
$25/ night for campus housing. Please call 803-786-5150 to make your
reservation.
Bishop's School
30 high-school
youth stay on the seminary campus to study and discuss basic
theological tenets as well as participate in a multicultural immersion
experience in the Columbia community. Participants must be nominated
by a parish pastor or rostered lay leader in his/her home congregation. Brochure & Registration
Career Crossroads

Often people are unhappy in their work and aren't sure which steps to take to find something that fits their gifts and enables them to pursue and express a meaningful life purpose.
