Carl and Miriam Fisher

The Rev. Dr. Carl Fisher (Class of 1958) and his wife Miriam see the big picture of the world.   They served in the mission fields, travelled extensively, and worked with global organizations.  They know from first-hand experience what it takes to make an impact in the world.  It takes leadership and a commitment to be passionate supporters of the growth of Christianity.

“By training the future leaders of the church, the seminary keeps the church alive, allowing Christians to make an impact on the world.  We believe in what the seminary does:  equipping ministers to serve within the church,” says Dr. Fisher.

“Over the years I have received the support and friendship of many other pastors.  We have shared with and supported each other.  The bond we have was built in seminary.”

It is important to the Fishers that ministers continue to receive training and support for faithful service. The Fishers believe that ministers are gifts to the global church (whether through ordained, rostered, or lay leaders).

“We already received gifts from those before us and it’s important to recognize those gifts.  As Christians, that’s what we do—we give back, we show appreciation.”  As a result, they are dedicated in their support of the seminary.

For years, they have supported the seminary through annual giving, but they wanted to do more.  They wanted to give a major gift to the seminary to help prepare the future of the church.  The method that fit their needs best was an end-of-life gift.

They created that gift using life insurance.  To meet their charitable goals, Charles Beatty, their Thrivent Financial for Lutherans representative, helped them arrange the details of their gift.

The gift is designated to begin a scholarship to benefit the people they served during their lifetime.  Their scholarship will give first priority to students from Southeast Asia, a place where they spent 15 years in mission work.  “It was important to leave a legacy to these special people.”  The Fishers know that students from this part of the world will benefit greatly from assistance for theological education.

The Fishers’ planned gift will create a legacy that will touch generations of future servant leaders.   With Carl and Miriam’s help, the seminary will continue to form Christian leaders that are ready to make an impact on the world in the years to come.
