2009 Morgan Lecture

“The 10th Anniversary of ‘The Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification:’ Implications for Church and Ministry.”
The seminary will host the 2009 Jacob L. Morgan Lecture given by the Rev. James Massa, Ph.D., and Rev. Dr. William G. Rusch, on Thursday, October 29 at 10:00AM in the Stavros Lecture Hall on the seminary campus.
This year’s lecture is entitled “The 10th Anniversary of ‘The Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification:’ Implications for Church and Ministry.” The speakers will discuss the 1999 agreement between the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation on this important teaching of the church.
There is no cost to attend the lecture, and the public is invited and encouraged to attend.
Rev. Massa is a priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn. He also serves as the Executive Director of the Secretariat of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
Rev. Rusch is a Lutheran pastor, as well as a professor at the Divinity School of Yale and the New York Theological Seminary. He has served as the Director of the Commission on Faith and Order of the National Council of Churches in the USA, and as the Director of the Department of Ecumenical Affairs and Assistant to the Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
The Jacob L. Morgan Lectureship was established in 1972 on the occasion of the centennial of Morgan’s birth. Dr. Morgan served as a pastor in the North Carolina Synod and as Synodical Missionary prior to becoming the first full-time President of the North Carolina Synod in 1919, a post which he occupied for twenty-eight years. The lectureship has featured some of the greatest names in modern theology since its establishment.
