2010 Hall Lectures: Dr. Richard A. Horsley

This year’s Hall Lectures topic is "Jesus and Empire" and will be delivered by Dr. Richard A. Horsley.  He will give the third of his three lectures, “Jesus and the New World Disorder” at the seminary on Friday, March 26 at 10:00am.  Other lectures will be held on Thursday at the University of South Carolina and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.

Dr. Horsley, Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts and the Study of Religion, University of Massachusetts, Boston, has served as President of the New England region of the Society of Biblical Literature. He has published seventeen books, including, most recently, Jesus in Context: Power, People, and Performance (2008).

One of Horsley's earlier books, Christian Origins: A People's History of Christianity (2005), examies who were the first Christians, how they lived and worshipped. Religion and Empire: People, Power, and the Life of the Spirit (2003) looks at the intersection of religions, rhetoric, and political life.

He has also published articles in such journals as New Testament Studies, Catholic Biblical Quarterly, Journal of Religion, and Harvard Theological Review. He has been an invited lecturer at Princeton, Duke, Emory, Brown, University of Pennsylvania, University of Minesota, and University of South Africa.

The Nadine Beacham and Charlton F. Hall Sr. Lectureship in New Testament Studies and Early Christianity is sponsored by the department of Religious Studies. It is held each year the week before Palm Sunday. In addition to the public lecture, it includes an ecumenical clergy day, and an in-depth discussion with pastors, priests and rabbis from around the state. All events are free and followed by a question and answer session.

The public is welcome and there is no cost to attend.
