The Rev. Dr. Brian K. Peterson
Associate Professor of New Testament
From its earliest days the church has gathered to hear the witness of scripture, believing that through these words God creates and nurtures faith. To study these texts is a holy, exciting, and joyful task. It is also a task that requires the best of our skills and our tools. Therefore, as a part of theological education we teach students the biblical languages, the history and cultures in which the Bible was written, and the tools of scholarship which will help them listen to these texts more carefully.
I believe that this discipline of biblical study is an important part of the students' own spiritual formation. These texts challenge our assumptions, and by the Spirit's power they change us. Those who are called to the public ministry of the gospel are also called, I believe, to help the rest of the church hear the biblical texts more clearly. For the sake of that communal hearing, I want our students to practice listening deeply to the texts, to wrestle with them, and in the end to be captured by them.
