Professor Emeritus Enters Church Triumphant

Luther was born Jan 2, 1933 in Hordville, Nebraska. He graduated in 1954 from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois where he courted his wife-to-be Adele Celeste Stone. Luther was ordained in 1958 and served his first parish at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Attleboro, Mass. from 1958 to 1964. He served his second parish at Trinity Lutheran Church in Chelmsford, Mass. from 1964 to 1969. In 1969 Luther and his family moved to Phoenixville, Pennsylvania to be near his new work at the Lutheran Church in America headquarters in Philadelphia. There he worked for 18 years for the Division for Parish Services. He earned his PhD in Philosophy of Education in 1969 from Boston University. In 1987 he and Adele moved to Columbia, South Carolina so he could pursue his life-long dream of being a professor. He was a Professor of Educational Ministry at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary from 1987 to 1996 and Seminary Dean from 1997 to 1999. He also taught calligraphy classes at the University of South Carolina and Midland Technical College for many years. He was a charter member of Living Springs Lutheran Church in Columbia.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of almost 54 years Adele; his brother Mark Lindberg and sister Martha Mann and Dorothy Wagner. He and Adele have three children; Chris Lindberg married to Javier Varisco, Marie Niemkiewicz married to Mark Niemkiewicz and Eric Lindberg married to Samara Sanders. Luther has a legacy of 10 grandchildren Britt, Kelsey and Andres Varisco, Kyle, Alec and Luke Niemkiewicz and Leif, Laila, Sydney and Cecilia Lindberg. Luther officiated at the weddings of all three of his children and baptized all ten of his grandchildren.
The memorial service will be held at Living Springs Lutheran Church on Saturday, June 12 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Luther and Adele Scholarship Fund at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary or Living Springs Lutheran Church.
