Utt Named 2010-11 Reinartz Scholar
July 19, 2010
Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina announces that the Rev. James H. Utt is the 2010-2011 F. Eppling Reinartz Scholar in Residence. The Reinartz Scholar program at the seminary recognizes excellence in ministry and a desire for further theological study related to special projects or publications in ministry.
Utt, a 1976 graduate of Southern Seminary, serves as senior pastor at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winchester, Virginia. He has served the congregation since January 1983 after previously serving Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia from 1976 to 1982. He earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary and in 2002, Shenandoah University recognized his local ecumenical efforts and work in the community by awarding him an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree.
The seminary and Utt are currently coordinating the schedule and topic of his resident stay on the seminary campus.
The Reinartz Scholars Program originated in 1977 in tribute to former seminary President, Dr. F. Eppling Reinartz (1961-1970). The scholar is selected each year by the seminary's Board of Trustees, who accepts nominations from the Bishops of the six synods located in Region 9 of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
The program enables pastors to come to the seminary campus for a weeklong residential experience of individual study and renewal. The scholar in residence also is able to interact daily with the seminary professors and students.
Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, one of eight seminaries of the ELCA, offers graduate and post-graduate theological degrees to teach, form, and nurture the future leaders of the church.
