Study to Identify Partnership Opportunities

August 28, 2010

Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary and Lenoir-Rhyne University are conducting a feasibility study to identify partnership opportunities between the institutions. The board of trustees of each of the two historically Lutheran institutions authorized the feasibility study to determine various options for partnership.

"The seminary is excited about exploring new opportunities for partnership with Lenoir-Rhyne," said the Rev. Dr. Marcus Miller, President of the seminary. "The feasibility study will identify partnerships that will enhance the mission and programs of each school, strengthen offerings on both the Columbia and Hickory campuses, better utilize resources, and, most importantly, enrich the student experience so that our church and world has the leaders it needs for generations to come."

The seminary's participation in the feasibility study is an outcome of March 2010 seminary Board of Trustees meeting. The board adopted multiple initiatives to grow effectiveness and improve the viability of the school, including exploring possible partnerships, reviewing curriculum models, increasing activities in congregations, evaluating underused seminary property, and expanding fundraising efforts.

The Lenoir-Rhyne University Board of Trustees adopted a resolution at its August 2010 meeting to initiate the feasibility study. The respective board chairs will appoint a feasibility committee to conduct the study and report findings to each governing body for review and possible further action. "The committee will explore a variety of opportunities between the seminary's graduate-level programs and Lenoir-Rhyne's liberal arts university system," said Miller. "This study will examine how different levels of partnership and collaboration may allow each school to more faithfully accomplish our missions."

Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, founded in 1830, is located in Columbia, S.C. One of eight seminaries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), the seminary offers graduate and post-graduate degrees to men and women from many Christian denominations and traditions.

Established in 1891, Lenoir-Rhyne University is a private, coeducational university located in Hickory, N.C. It is affiliated with the N.C. Synod of the ELCA and is open to students from all religious backgrounds seeking undergraduate and graduate degrees.
