Southern Seminary Adds New Study Program and Faculty Member

The African American Studies Program is a new offering at Southern Seminary. The program will be designed to increase outreach within Region 9 of the ELCA. In addition to his duties as a faculty member, Thomas will be responsible for building and managing this new program.
Thomas comes to the seminary after serving the last 13 years as pastor at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bronx, New York. He also serves as the Educational Director at Book and Rattles School, a preschool for children with special needs.
Additionally, Thomas has served as an adjunct professor at Luther Seminary in Minneapolis and the Lutheran Program at General Theological Seminary in New York City. He was a Reserve Air Force Chaplain for 28 years, leaving service having achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Thomas received his Master of Divinity from Christ Seminary in St. Louis, a Master of Sacred Theology from Union Seminary in New York, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He also has studied at City University and the Bank Street College of Education, both in New York.
