Three Selected for Scholar Award at Southern Seminary

July 9, 2008

Three pastors from Region 9 of the ELCA have been award awarded with the distinguished honor of Reinartz Scholar by Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. The award recognizes excellence in ministry and a desire for further theological study related to special projects or publications in ministry.

This year’s recipients are the Rev. Louise Hilbert, pastor of St. James Lutheran Church in Fayetteville, NC, The Rev. Mary Anderson, pastor of Lutheran Church of the Incarnation in Columbia, SC, and The Rev. David Helfrich, pastor of Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Marietta, GA. A fourth recipient is expected to be announced at a later date. The pastors were nominated by their bishop and staffs of their synods and selected for the award by the President, Dean, and Coordinator of Lifelong Learning of the seminary.

Pastor Hilbert visit the seminary on the week of October 5-11, 2008, where she will focus on radical hospitality in ELCA congregations and how it might intersect with deep spiritual hungers people feel. Pastor Anderson will spend the week of October 27-November 2, 2008 on campus, where she will focus on adult catechumenate and how to incorporate rituals and liturgical process to make them more accessible to congregations and pastors. Pastor Helfrich will be on campus the week of February 16-22, 2009, and is still determining his intended area of study.

The Reinartz Scholars Program originated in 1977 in tribute to former seminary President, Dr. F. Eppling Reinartz (1961-1970). The program enables pastors to come to the seminary campus for individual study and renewal, and interact daily with the seminary professors and students.
