The Rev. Dr. Lowell G. Almen, Trustee of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary and former secretary of the Evangelical Church in America (ELCA), was given the Walton H. Greever Award by the James R. Crumley Jr. Archives on Friday November 7, 2008 in Columbia, South Carolina.
The award was presented at the annual banquet of the archives and was presented by the Rev. Dr. Carl Ficken ('68), 2008 president of the archives board. President Marcus Miller of Southern Seminary also spoke in honor of Almen at the banquet.
Almen has served on the Board of Trustees since March 2008. He has a long and historic life of service in the church, which includes his work with the ELCA, editor and publisher of The Lutheran Standard of the American Lutheran Church, and parish pastor. He has been a voice in international and ecumenical discussions, including meeting with both Pope Benedict XVI and Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. He is an author and editor of publications on matters of faith and led various forums in congregations and groups throughout the United States and abroad.
The Walton H. Greever Award recognizes distinguished leadership to church and society. There he was pastor of Ascension Lutheran Church (1912-1929), founder and editor of the American Lutheran Standard newspaper and general manager of Lutheran Survey Publishing Co. (1914-1928), and Executive Secretary of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (1922-1933).
The James R. Crumley Jr. Archives serves Region 9 of the ELCA and is located on the seminary campus, on the bottom level of the Lineberger Memorial Library.
