Seminary to Host Military Chaplaincy Workshop

Answering God's call to serve military members and their families
Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina is offering a two-day workshop to assist seminary students, prospective seminary students, and current pastors of all denominations, to examine the ministry of military chaplains and the possibility of call to serve as a chaplain.
Topics will include:
• Examining the theology and ethics of serving as a pastor in a military environment
• Brief history of military chaplaincy
• Tour of Ft Jackson Chaplain School and Museum with dinner on at Ft Jackson
o Discussions with active duty chaplains and retired chaplain
o Discussions with chaplains who have recently returned from a combat zone.
o Qualification requirements
o Challenges and rewards of a call to military chaplaincy for both pastors and families.
• Ministry in Active, Reserve, and National Guard
The workshop will begin at 1:00 PM on Friday April 17 and finish at 12:00 PM on April 18th. Registration fee is $25 per person. Limited housing is available at LTSS.

Workshop Leaders:
The Rev. Darrel Morton, Woodbridge, Virginia, is the Assistant to the Presiding Bishop for Federal Chaplaincy Ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Pastor Morton serves as the endorsing agent for all ELCA federal chaplains, which includes chaplains of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Federal Bureau of Prisons, the military chaplaincies and the Civil Air Patrol; and serves as the ELCA liaison with those federal agencies. Pastor Morton is a retired Air Force chaplain (Colonel) where he served for 25 years until he retired to assume his current call.
The Rev. Hugh Dukes, Louisville, Kentucky is an associate of APC Solutions supporting the Army Chaplaincy through mentoring and recruiting programs. Pastor Dukes is an ordained minister of the American Baptist Churches, USA. Pastor Dukes is a retired Army chaplain (Colonel) where he served for 30 years. During his ministry in the military Chaplain Dukes served in a variety of positions including Director of Personnel and Ecclesiastical Relations at the Office of the Chief of Chaplains, Post Chaplain at Ft Knox, and Division Chaplain 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division.
The Rev. Bud Onstad, Conyers, Georgia is the project coordinator for Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary's Military Chaplaincy Discernment and Professional Development Program. Prior to accepting this position, Pastor Onstad served as the assistant to the bishop, pastor for leadership in Southeastern Synod. Pastor Onstad is a retired Army Chaplain (Lieutenant Colonel) were he served for 24 years. Chaplain Onstad served in a variety of positions including Director of the US Army Family Life Chaplain Training Program at Fort Benning,GA, Family Life Chaplain at Fort Bragg, NC and Brigade Chaplain in units in Germany and California.
