Professor Joins Peacemaker Delegation
July 15, 2009
Nine members of a delegation sponsored by Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) arrived in Bogota, Colombia, last night, including the Rev. Dr. James Thomas, Associate Professor of Church and Ministry at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary.
The delegates, from across the U.S. and Canada, will meet with church leaders and representatives of human rights organizations in the capital and in the industrial city Barrancabermeja. They will then travel to a San Pablo, a rural area along the Magdalena River in southern Bolivar province, to meet with grassroots organizations that, even in face of death-threats, continue to call for human right, justice, and peace in Colombia.
Other members of CPT's July 14-27 Colombia delegation are Roberta Bender (Kankakee, Illinois), Gavin Betzelberger (Carbondale, Illinois), Cornelius Deppe (Seattle, Washington), Catherine Gutjahr (Hanmer, Ontario), Helen Reed (Camrose, Alberta), Nicholas Swenson (Seattle, Washington), Nathan Toews (N. Newton, Kansas), and John Volkening (Chicago, Illinois).
Christian Peacemaker Teams is an initiative of the historic peace churches (Mennonites, Church of the Brethren, and Quakers) with support and membership from a range of Catholic and Protestant denominations. CPT has had a continuing presence in Colombia since May 2001.
