Seminary Faculty Releases New Book
August 25, 2009
The faculty at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary has released Proclaiming the Gospel: Preaching for the Life of the Church, an inter-disciplinary book focused on the tradition of the preaching. Fifteen current and emeriti members of the seminary faculty are contributors to the collection.
"This collection will help readers to think more deeply about a central part of the ministry of the Word—that of preaching—from all of those disciplines of theological study, says Rev. Dr. Brian K. Peterson, Professor of New Testament and editor of the book. " It will help them to see all of the ways in which preaching is shaped and formed in the faithful ways by the biblical, systematic, historical, and pastoral dimensions of the church's theological tradition."
The volume captures central emphases of the Lutheran tradition for use in preaching, especially its distinctive use of the Bible, its Archimedean theological insights, and its notion of preaching's place within the larger liturgical and societal setting.
Working from across the whole array of seminary disciplines, the seminary faculty forges this practical resource around a single vision: the Church of Christ lives from the power of the Word of God, both the law and the gospel. Preaching this Word is a means of grace by which God creates and shapes a redeemed community. This book reflects biblically, theologically, historically, and practically on what it means for the church to preach the gospel of God in the contemporary world.
The Rev. Dr. Marcus J. Miller, President of the seminary, writes in the book's foreward, "From our various disciplines and backgrounds, teachers at Southern Seminary offer their perception and understanding of preaching. It is not intended to burden the preacher further with one more perspective to which you must attend, but, rather, to assist the preacher in seeing and hearing again from teachers of the church the importance of your task."
Proclaiming the Gospel is published by Fortress Press and is available for order through Augsburg Fortress.
The seminary, one of eight seminaries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), offers post-graduate theological degrees to those desiring to enter ministry in the ELCA and other denominations, as well as those desiring to deepen their theological understanding.
