Nothing But Nets Campaign Successful
May 1, 2008
The Community Action Council at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary raised $1,267 for the Nothing But Nets campaign to prevent malaria in Africa. The student-led committee sponsored a silent auction where students, faculty, and staff offered up various items and services on the auction block. Some of the items were furniture that students were purging from their apartments, homemade jewelry, home-cooked meals with faculty members, and a Swedish spa basket donated by the Junior class. The silent auction's success surpassed all expectations of the student leaders and faculty advisor, who originally set a goal of $500 for the fundraiser. The seminary community celebrated the success by inviting the chair of South Carolina United Methodist Conferences' Board of Global Ministries, Reverend Michael Henderson, to daily chapel on April 30. The committee presented Reverend Henderson with the check and he spoke about the mission and actions of the Board of Global Ministries. Reverend Henderson explained that the Gates Foundation will match the money raised for every net that is purchased for children in malaria prone areas of Africa. The faithfulness of the faculty, staff, and students at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary enabled over 120 nets to be purchased with the auction's funds, and with the matching of the Gates Foundation over 200 nets will be sent to Africa.
