Pastor to the Seminary Community for Spiritual Formation

Southern Seminary created this unique staff position in 1999 to provide a relevant pastoral ministry to the members of our campus community, especially to students, spouses and children.  Our full-time Seminary Pastor is the Rev. Dr. John Largen.

In the context of his Word and sacrament ministry among us, Pastor Largen emphasizes our intentional growth in the spiritual life.  This emphasis is based on the understanding that one's own intimacy with God in a prayerful life is the very beginning, source, and core of one's ministry.

Each year, the Seminary Pastor provides a variety of programming to engage the seminary community in the church's rich tradition of prayer and spiritual disciplines.  These programs include guided opportunities to learn foundational practices such as contemplative prayer, lectio divina, making a retreat, spiritual direction, and pilgrimage.  The offerings are intended to facilitate our growth into a healthy Christian spirituality that will sustain us over the long haul of public ministry.

Program announcements are presented annually in a Spiritual Formation Calendar, with regular updates in the LTSS Weekly News.  The faculty's 1998 position paper, Spirituality and Spiritual Formation, serves as a core reference.
