Faculty Position Paper
Well before Christian spirituality became a major topic in Lutheran seminaries, and in order to facilitate discussion within a church possessing a hermeneutic of suspicion of all things “spiritual,” the faculty of Southern Seminary composed its own position paper on Spirituality & Spiritual Formation. It is a careful theological reflection on the topic in light of our Lutheran Confessions and ecumenical affirmations. The document considers the “shape” of spiritual formation and its implications for theological education. And it even offers practical counsel on the increasingly popular practice of “spiritual direction.”
An byproduct of the faculty’s work was the creation of the unique full-time staff position of Pastor to the Seminary Community for Spiritual Formation.
Today, the position paper continues to generate fruitful discussion in the church, and it serves as a core reference for Southern Seminary’s spiritual formation programming.
