Provost: School of Theology
Lenoir-Rhyne University (LRU) and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (LTSS) invite applications and nominations for the position of Provost of the Lenoir-Rhyne School of Theology. Lenoir-Rhyne and Southern Seminary, two institutions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), anticipate completing a merger into a single institution in the summer of 2012. The expected merger will result in LTSS becoming part of the School of Theology of LRU, the first such affiliation of an ELCA seminary with a college or university.

LRU and LTSS seek a visionary leader to direct the formation of a unified School of Theology encompassing the existing programs of LTSS and the undergraduate programs in religion and theology at LRU on two campuses, in Columbia, SC, and Hickory, NC. The ideal candidate will have a distinguished record of academic teaching and scholarship, administrative experience and skills, and outreach skills. Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate and ordination in the ELCA.
The Provost of the School of Theology will be the chief academic and administrative officer of the School. She or he will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to develop one of the premier seminaries in the country. The Provost will be primarily located in Columbia, South Carolina.
The Provost of the School of Theology will report directly to the President of the University and will be a senior member of the university administration. She or he will work closely with the Provost of the University and the Vice Presidents for Administration & Finance, Enrollment Management, and Institutional Advancement.
In addition to the Board of Trustees of the University, the School of Theology, and especially the Seminary, will work closely with an Advisory Council. The Provost will take a leadership role in this interaction.

Founded in 1891, Lenoir-Rhyne University is one of 26 universities and colleges of the ELCA. LRU has a long and distinguished history of maintaining its partnership with the ELCA and has historically been a national leader in preparing undergraduates for seminary study. LRU enrolls almost 1900 students, including 250 graduate students, at its campus in Hickory and is experiencing unprecedented growth and financial success. Lenoir-Rhyne University (LRU) and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (LTSS) seek applications for the position of Associate Director of the Lineberger Library on the LTSS campus in Columbia, South Carolina, beginning June 2012. Lenoir-Rhyne and Southern Seminary, two institutions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), anticipate completing a merger into a single institution in the summer of 2012. The expected merger will result in LTSS becoming part of the School of Theology of LRU, the first such affiliation of an ELCA seminary with a college or university. In addition, the University intends to increase graduate programming on the campus in the coming years as it expands upon its mission.
The position requires an innovative and service-oriented leader who is student-centered, who will actively participate in all library services, and who will model adaptability, communication, problem solving, accountability, and teamwork. Experience with course management systems, a strong computer background, and familiarity with library automation programs and electronic databases are necessary. Enthusiasm for instruction and reference responsibilities is required. The successful candidate will possess the flexibility, initiative, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively with staff on campus and colleagues at different sites. S/he will demonstrate evidence of both commitment and capacity for teaching excellence, student mentorship, professional engagement, and campus citizenship.
The appointment is continuing, subject to annual review and re-appointment. It carries faculty status, including privileges associated with Faculty Assembly. The Associate Director works under the direction of and in close collaboration with the Director of Library Services on the Lenoir-Rhyne University campus, directing the Lineberger Library as an integral component of the seminary and other graduate programs offered on the Columbia campus. S/he will participate in staff meetings with the Library staff on the Hickory campus. The position may entail occasional evening and weekend hours.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and administer operational policies and procedures of the library;
- Recommend and monitor the library budget;
- Supervise library staff;
- Provide innovative instruction across the graduate curriculum by such means as regular collaboration with faculty, integration of resources into on-campus and online courses, and in-person/in-class instruction;
- Provide effective general and specialized reference and research services to students and faculty for all campus programs; and
- Oversee planning and assessment of library programs and needs.
Required characteristics of the successful candidate will include:
- A Master's degree from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science program;
- A Master’s degree in Religious Studies, Theology, Divinity, or closely-related area from an appropriate accredited institution;
- At least five years of professional library experience, preferably in an academic environment; and
- Minimum of two years supervisory or management experience in a library, with duties of directing and administering library services; long-range planning; and budget planning and management.
Additionally, preferred characteristics for the appointment will include:
- Experience with off-campus and distance education librarianship;
- Experience with current reference practices and technologies;
- Experience with library instruction and the preparation of instructional materials or tutorials; and
- Experience with instructional or educational technology.
